Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Hello there, we're BASSOOKAH, a three-piece band from The Netherlands. It basically got formed in summer 2008 when two long-time friends had too much time on their hands and started recording some stuff under the name ZxMxM. When people surprisingly gave us good replies and offers for live shows came around the corner, the line up changed a little bit and the bandname was changed into BASSOOKAH. Nowadays BASSOOKAH is: Kanza (vocals, programming), J. (guitars) and Xormic (bass, backing vocals).
How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Our music is not the regular grindcore or goregrind band out there, and therefore we have recieved many weird descriptions for our music. We have been described as "terror death metal", "tekno gore", "breakcore thrash" and even "breakbeat core metal", but we ourselves prefer the description "drum'n'bass grindcore". We mix, or at least try to mix, the energy of drum'n'bass and breakcore in the programming with the energy of grindcore in it's riffing, mixed with brutal vocal lines and an important share for our kind of strange sense of humor. Some bands who have influenced us directly are M.A.C. of Mad, Drumcorps, BBYB and Bong-Ra, and indirectly bands such as GUT, Cock And Ball Torture, Rompeprop, Asian Dub Foundation and The Prodigy have too !
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
Because our experience with metalheads is that they're really open minded for anything new. Our music is not only brutal and energetic, it's as well silly from time to time, so it gives a lot of things to discover.
What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
So far we have released a promo CDr that we have been spreading out for free, simply named "Promo2010" (it's for download available as well) - and next to that we have been appearing on some free download compilations ("Love At First Grind - Volume 1", "Fuck Your Face And The Skull It Came On - Volume 1") and some CDr compilations ("World Of Ass", "Betontegel Festival CD Compilation"). All information about how to get these can be found on our MySpace page. Another compilation featuring BASSOOKAH will be released soon, the "Too Short Too Handle" 7" compilation, we're on it with cool bands such as AxSxH, Slapendehonden, Primordial Sounds, a.o... really excited about that one !
Do you play live as well? How's your live activity so far?
Yes, as mentioned before we do play live. Our first live show was at a local venue, it was more or less one big improvisation, but since then our live activity and as well our live show has increased a lot. We already headlined the "Betontegel Experimental Festival" (a festival in the north of The Netherlands that is highly acclaimed for any experimental act) and we were the opening / support act for the Singapore grindcore freaks of Wormrot (on Earache Records) on the final gig of their European tour. Right now our next show is in November, but still some more shows are in preparation, so keep on checking our MySpace page.
What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
That we're a fairly young band who's enthausiastic to participate in anything cool - be it releases, be it reviews, be it compilations, be it splits, be it live gigs, be it interviews... we're ready for anything, just write us !
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
For now it exists of recording a bunch of new stuff... we have an upcoming free download EP coming up on the French netlabel NKS Records that will feature all new and unreleased songs, as well we are working on some more live shows. Next to that it's basically promoting, promoting, promoting... haha !
Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
As we mentioned a few times before on this interview we have a MySpace page that's updated very frequently, and now I'll give the URL so all of you can listen to our stuff too ; www.myspace.com/zxmxm ! We can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org for any trades, sales or anything. Thanks and cheers !
