Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The formation of …From the Deep was an organic process which brought Mike Birch (guitars), Jake Sparling (guitars), Graham Cwinn (vocals), Dave Solomon (bass) and Nick Kaminski (drums) together in 2009. Each musician has individual and complex approaches to music, and we strive to create strange soundscapes with limitless possibilities.
How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
…From the Deep aim to create a sense of uncertainty in our music and lyrics with ever changing moods, styles and atmosphere. We have many influences including Opeth. Meshuggah, Withered, Gorguts, Decapitated, and many more. These influences have contributed to the progressive, groovy, brooding sounds which we continue to produce.
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
…From the Deep is a reference to the unknown – an exploration and exploitation of the hidden absurdities which hide in our minds. We create music that satisfies our own need for variety and experimentation, and in doing so, hope it meets the fans as well.
What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
In 2015, …From the Deep released our EP “The Absurd Horror”, and in 2010 released our first self titled demo. Here are some reviews we have received:
“As is apparent from first listen, …From the Deep employ a certain sophistication, a high level of intelligence amongst the gnashing, fighting, gloriously grotesque atmosphere of their music.” – SputnikMusic.com
“The warp speed black metal tremolo picking to the more down tuned death metal chugging riffs, to the skull pounding bass and the ever blasting drums make ‘The Absurd Horror’ sickeningly addictive.” – CadaverGarden.Wordpress.com
“The vocalist appeared just behind, next or in front of me while he performed his varied and highly passionate extreme metal vocals. This dynamical and vivid approach attracted more and more people from the bar and the terrace to see the opening band performing an intense thirty-minute long set.” – Kluseba.eklablog.com
Do you play live as well? How's your live activity so far?
Despite only having two releases, we play shows on a consistent basis. We perform enigmatic and visually stimulating sets, and combine this with self inflicted physical brutality, which have been monumental in our band’s progression. In 2014 we were the En Route to Heavy MTL Ottawa Champions, Wacken Metal Battle challengers, and have played with many international acts including (but not limited to) Kreator, Taake, Origin, Absu, Cattle Decapitation, Macabre, Marduk, and many more.
What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
If you’ve ever questioned the insignificance of our existence when faced with the vast intricacies of the universe, or simply enjoy dynamic excruciating metal with breaths of calm, then you may very well find something in our music you like…
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
We aim to continue playing as many live shows in as many cities as possible, to continue to write music that keeps even us guessing, and to drag everyone down to the wretched depths with us…
