Please present your label, when and where was it started, who is involved in its activities and what genres are promoted by it:
Glorious North Productions is solely operated by myself - Matt, based in Harrogate, England.
Intending to release material that is either black metal or ambient, on all physical formats as well as different types of merchandise.
Glorious North’s first release was in December 2010, though the actual planning processes began a few months previously.
Tell us a few words on each or the most important releases of your label, and which of them are still available for purchase.
I don’t think I could ever prioritise one release over another, as they all have their own specific qualities, plus some older and more limited releases are now sold out, so I’ll just mention what’s being selling well recently:
Nordland – "Nordland”: Black metal that praises heathendom, rejecting the modern age. Nordland is cold, old world hatred for modern humanity, and a love of silent, old forgotten places. With dynamics that are constantly in flux, wreaking grey emptiness and tyranny upon the sun. Nordland is an effective foray into atmospheric antiquity and human suffering.
Emit – "Spectre Music of an Antiquary”: A return of England's blackened monastery, Emit. Publishing under the title of Hammemit for a number of years, "Spectre Music of an Antiquary" is Emit’s first release since 2009. Not a complete return to Emit's black noise of yore, but a more eerily haunting passage of Druidical black ambient into the folklore of Southern England.
Arckanum – T-Shirts: Official Arckanum shirts, exclusively licensed to Glorious North Productions.
Pantheon of Blood – "Consociatio Solis et Lunae”: I may be bias, but this is quite a favourite of mine; delving deep into the bloodline of humanity, the mysterious beauty of the moon, the splendour of the sun. Manifesting The Absolute, The Almighty & The Divine.
What are the most important features you look for in a band that is or has the chance to be signed on your label?
Bands that show dedication, creativity and their own identity to stand out from the faceless hordes. Bands that know what they want, and how they want to achieve their target. Bands that catch and hold my attention, as well as that of other listeners.
Sometimes it can even be dependent upon my tastes at the time, and ultimately I’d never release something I wouldn’t listen to myself.
How can a band get in touch with you? What should bands know before submitting their promos for your consideration?
Bands are encouraged to contact me initially through the contact page of my website, and be prepared to send a promo Cdr / tape with a brief band bio.
Though bands should be aware that I receive large amounts of requests and potential demo submissions, and whilst I try to reply to all one way or another, it’s not always possible, and that I am only one man.
I also feel it’s right to mention that Glorious North Productions is not one of those labels that will release anything without question. I do listen to promos, and remember that I’m only interested in underground metal, if your band dreams of touring the world with more commercial acts, then I’ve no desire to assist you. Likewise, if you have 10+ projects which all sound the same, it’s fair to say I’m not going to be too interested either.
What's the most important thing in the relationship between you and your bands? What is your label offering to its bands?
Trust, honesty, commitment and communication. I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside magnificent bands that’ve always shown support, understanding and cooperation.
Bands receive from me; full support and promotion with their releases, as well as various forms of merchandise to accompany their physical products. All releases are professionally printed, thus maintaining a high level of quality, so bands (and listeners) know exactly what they’re getting.
I’ve become quite close friends with most of the bands I’ve worked with, and they continue to put faith in me, so I’m clearly doing something right.
Is there anything you planned with your label and has not yet been completed?
There are a few things I feel I’m yet to achieve, whether it be working with certain bands, or releasing more material on vinyl. Though I’m always tempted to try more unconventional methods of releasing music, even a floppy disk, but nothing’s materialised in these forms... Yet.
How does the future looks for your label? Any major projects you would like to share with us?
The outcome of the future looks as it always will, it’ll become what you make, though I’ll carry on releasing regardless.
A few current releases planned are:
A 7” vinyl split between Pantheon of Blood & Creatura – "Lapis Philosophorum: The Eternal Stone within the Bosom of Silver Star"
Nordland’s second full length album "The True Cult of the Earth”
Written in Torment’s first full length "Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes”. Both due on CD
