Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
As Autumn Calls is a melodic death/doom band which was formed during the summer of 2005 in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada by Andrew (guitars, clean vocals) and James (bass, death vocals). We originally started by playing covers songs from all styles of metal but quickly branched out into writing and recording original material.
Between 2005 and 2008, Andrew and James wrote and recorded ‘An Autumn Departure’. The songs showed potential though the production needed a lot of work. In the end we decided to put the album on hold and started work on new material which would become the Emotionless EP, released in December of 2009.
In early 2010, we were approached by The Northern Cold Productions (a tape only label) to release a limited edition cassette. We saw this as an opportunity to re-record and release ‘An Autumn Departure’ which otherwise may never have been released. Also during this time, we recruited Darren to perform the drums for the cassette and invited him become an official member of As Autumn Calls in August 2010. ‘An Autumn Departure’ is scheduled for release in September 2010.
2010 also saw the band sign a deal with Naturmacht Productions (Germany) to release a full length album in 2011 and future recordings after that.
How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
We consider ourselves an atmospheric death/doom metal band with elements of black metal and melodic death metal. We write emotional music with themes of sorrow, romantic tragedy and death. We don’t write according to any formula and we try not to confine ourselves musically. Our influences continue to grow but our primary influences include Saturnus, older Katatonia, Estatic Fear, Doom: VS, Draconian, My Dying Bride, Agalloch, Morgion, Opeth, Forest of Shadows and Thorns of the Carrion just to name a few.
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
We make music because it is a passion of ours. Our main goal is to have our music heard by people interested in heavy, dark, depressing music. We just hope that people can get the same enjoyment out of listening to our music as we do creating it. Buying our releases just helps us pay for the cost of making music – we definitely do not make money on this.
What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
At the time of this writing our only release is the Emotionless EP which was released in Dec 2009. It is a 3 track EP that runs about 24 minutes. The response to that EP has been mostly positive to this point with reviews ranging from 6.5 - 9 out of 10. You can read the reviews for yourself here www.asautumncalls.com/media.php.
Do you play live as well? How's your live activity so far?
We have yet to perform a live show though we have put together a full line-up with the intention of playing live in the very near future.
What sould labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
We are set to release a full length cassette of older material which is slightly different than that of the Emotionless EP. We are also working on new material for a full length album for release in 2011 which will see better production and song writing then previous releases. Last but not least we have added a drummer to the line-up and he also has good experience with keyboards - so look for improved drumming and atmosphere.
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
As we have already stated we will be releasing a limited edition cassette (Limited to 100 copies) titled ‘An Autumn Departure’ which is set to be released September 2010. We will continue to work on the new material for our full length release in 2011 and we will continue to practice as a full band so we can hopefully put on a show in the near future.
