Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Ms. Meka : I founded the band as a concept project called Meka Nism & her Rusty Tears, based on a dream series I had that took place in an unusual version of Hell. It was dark, intense, and philosophical with saxophone and other unusual instruments, but very different from the present incarnation. I released my acoustic heartache
album, “Mad to Love,” in 2007 from Hidden Records, the same weekend that I moved to Japan. I lived in Japan for 3 years, playing over 150 shows as Ms. Meka Nism, Origami Girls and occasional performance art appearances. Returned from Japan in the middle of 2010 and decided to stick around Florida longer than expected after deciding to go full blast into the full band arrangement when I met Bobby Keller and the metal sparks were flying for a perfect band chemistry that would take my vision to a next level of elevated awesomeness. Brought in keyboardist Jay Adkission when we started touring after the release of our 2nd EP, “The Shift: Anthems for a Revolution,” and then more recently Jarret Robinson on bass and James Christopher Lane aka “Savage” on drums. It’s a great line up of creative, talented and genuine people that I really enjoying writing and performing with, all freaking beasts on stage, for real!
How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Ms. Meka: A lifelong journey of creating something unique, while being inspired by some of the greats. We are often called Alternative Metal recently, which is getting closer to describing what we do. I like to call it Shaman metal, because I study International spiritual energy healing. I have a loud voice and presence, and the message that my soul wants to sing/scream is best delivered with an extreme, epic soundtrack. I have always played guitar and experimented with different instrumental arrangements. This one is the best, a pure metal aspect is just the launching pad for the blast off of sonic and spiritual empowerment that explodes from all of us coming together to express our passion.
Bobby Keller: We have so many different influences, especially with each band member. We all pull from one another and collaborate a lot. For me, I know that Metallica, Pantera, and earlier metal bands really shaped the way I play and the music I write. It’s classic and timeless, plus they are the bands that really move me, so why not try and do the same for someone else.
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
Bobby Keller: The new EP is something very special, and the best stuff we’ve done to date. The songs are powerful, heavy, melodic, and have a very positive message. We are trying to do something new in metal and we want to try and take everything to another level. You won’t be disappointed with this EP, plus the production is top notch. I like to give a special thank you to Lasse Lammert, who we recorded it with in Germany. He did a fantastic job capturing our sound!
What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
Bobby & Meka: We have released two other EP’s (The Shift: Anthems for a Revolution 2015 and Dance at the End of the World 2013) as well as a live album from our show at the Machine Shop released in 2016. We made it on to some magazine’s Top album of 2015 lists with The Shift… and got voted Best of Orlando Metal Band 2016 for Orlando Weekly. We’ve always had a very enthusiastic response to our music. The best ones are when we play in front of a crowd that’s never seen us, and we totally
win them over.
Do you play live as well? How's your live activity so far?
Bobby Keller: We are a live band, hands down. We put a lot of energy and power into our shows. We try and take the energy the crowd gives us and amplify it by 100%, we take a lot of pride in our stage performance. So expect a lot of head banging, movement, and chaos (in a good way).
Meka: We’ve done some touring over the past few years with Otep, Trapt and our absolute favorites AVATAR!!!!! Recently, we played a small festival in Germany when we were over there recording, “The War Inside.” The crowd was amazing; everyone was so crazy in to it. Can’t wait to get back on tour, North America, Europe and definitely dying to take the guys to Japan to see my other home base and met my Japanese fam.
What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Bobby Keller: Our band is something new and fresh, we aren’t faking anything. We are trying to carve our way into the metal genre and be one of legendary bands that changed/did something. We work really hard, and aren’t afraid of doing whatever it takes.
We promote positivity through our music and have been gaining a lot of momentum lately with the release of our first single “The War Inside”. We plan on continuing strong with the rest of the songs off of the EP and touring like crazy!
Ms. Meka: It is rare to find art that hasn’t been seen before. We aren’t exactly like anything else, so it may knock people off their normal flow. That is exactly why they should be interested in Meka Nism. We are a driving a new force of inspiration with Shamanic spiritually charged electricity. It’s hard to define something that is constantly expanding and being forged and crafted through the use of unexpected themes and influences. We truly are a machine of many gears all cranking out the metal power together.
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
Ms Meka: It’s time to release our new EP, "The War Inside.” There will be more music videos and more touring. We can’t wait to take these new songs out to the world.
Bobby Keller: We are shooting another music video for the next single “Trailblazer” and the official release of the EP is on May 10th with an in-store signing at Park Ave CD’s in Orlando. Other than that, we are planning some big shows and touring for the summer.
